One of the advantages of working with ASCII encoded text files is their cross platform ability. However, if you're working between MS DOS and UNIX systems, you might be led to think otherwise when you find your text files rendered incorrectly.

The truth is that the problem occurs because MS DOS and UNIX systems utilize different end of line terminators found in text files: MS DOS uses a Carriage Return and Line Feed (CRLF), UNIX uses a single Line Feed (LF).

Thus, when encoded in ASCII, a UNIX text file in MS DOS will be interpreted as a single line of text, and MS DOS text files, in UNIX editors, will be riddled with Ctrl-M (^M) characters.

Why Make The Conversion?

This is a problem in cases where you want to compile and run UNIX applications on Microsoft Windows, for instance. It requires porting text file source code to the MS DOS system, which (despite its rare commercial usage) is still being used to maintain the internal functions of Windows programs.

Or where client-server transactions and CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programs are concerned, you'll find that the difference in line terminators can also mean the difference between a successfully executed program or a completely corrupted file.

An ideal way of avoiding line terminator issues is to translate the DOS and UNIX line terminators by converting between formats. To do this, you can use iConv's online DOS to UNIX data converter.
