What is the M3U Format?

The iTunes application can be useful for creating playlists that contain entire MP3 libraries. If you've ever wanted to migrate that perfect playlist you've created to another music player, however, now you can. You can do it by converting them into the M3U file format.

Important to note is that the M3U format itself doesn't contain any audio data, however. The contents of the file itself is a textual list of queued MP3 files and path names that link to the sound data's folder or online source, and plays it from its source location, also known as "streaming". When you use M3U files, MP3 programs will look for a specific file listed in a specific directory.

M3U is originally a default WinAmp format used to save playlists. The format lets you conveniently access your iTunes playlists. Or, you can use the format to creatively organize and access your iTunes files stored within a number of different folders.

The best part about the M3U format is that it's currently supported by a number of applications.
